Name checker
Minecraft name checker
Type any Minecraft: Java Edition username, from 3 to 16 characters, and see whether it is taken, available, blocked or about to drop.
What the checker tells you
| Answer | What it means |
|---|---|
| Taken | An account has the name right now. You get its page, with the player's skin and the names that account has had. |
| Available | Nobody has it and Minecraft accepts it: you can change your name to it today. |
| Dropping soon | Its owner renamed away and the name is in its 37 days of reserve. You get the window we expect it to drop in, with a countdown. |
| Free | No account has it, but we have not asked Minecraft whether it can be claimed: it may be held, or blocked. |
| Blocked | Mojang does not allow the name: nobody can take it. |
How this Minecraft username checker works
37 Days looks up every three-character and four-character username over and over, so for those the answer comes straight from our last look, usually minutes old. A longer name is asked of Mojang the moment you search it, and from then on we keep looking at it too.
That is the difference with a checker that only asks "does this name exist?": when a name stops having an owner we know roughly when it happened, and that dates its drop. A name that is taken today may be on the list of upcoming drops tomorrow.
The name I want is taken
Then there are two things to do. Look at its name history to see how often that account changes its name, and follow the name: we tell you on Discord or by e-mail when its owner leaves it, when it is about to drop and when it is free. Names of three characters hardly ever come up: see how many 3-letter names there are and which drop next.
Questions about checking a name
Is a Minecraft name that shows as available really free to take?
"Available" here means Minecraft itself said the name can be claimed when we last asked. It can still be taken by someone else between our look and your try, so change your name as soon as you see it.
Why does a name nobody has say it cannot be claimed?
When a player changes their username, the old one stays reserved for 37 days. During that time no account has it, yet nobody can take it. The checker shows those as dropping soon, with the window they are expected to drop in. How the 37-day rule works.
Does it work for Bedrock gamertags?
No. This checks Minecraft: Java Edition usernames, which are the ones that drop after 37 days. Bedrock uses Xbox gamertags, which follow other rules.
Does upper or lower case matter?
No. Notch, notch and NOTCH are the same username: only one account can have it. We show a name the way its owner writes it.
